Gum Health: Signs to Watch For and Why You Shouldn't Wait

When we think of a healthy smile, we almost always think of teeth. Yet it is the gums and supporting tissues that hold everything else in place. Healthy gums are the foundation of any stable smile — with or without restorative treatment — and the signs that something is wrong often appear subtly, without any pain. In this article we explain what to look out for and what you can do day to day.

What do healthy gums look like?

In general, healthy gums are pink, firm in texture and fit snugly around each tooth, with no visible swelling. They don't usually bleed when you brush or when you use floss or interdental brushes. It's worth noting that colour and shape vary naturally from person to person, so what is normal for you can only be confirmed through a clinical assessment.

Signs that deserve attention

Some changes should never be dismissed, even if they don't hurt: red, swollen or tender gums; bleeding during oral hygiene; persistent bad breath; gums that seem to have receded, leaving teeth looking longer or feeling sensitive; and teeth that seem to have shifted or become slightly loose. Any of these signs warrants an assessment, because gum disease often progresses silently.

Why inflammation should not be ignored

Gum inflammation is frequently associated with the build-up of bacterial plaque. In its early stage, it may be reversible with proper hygiene and professional follow-up. If left to progress, it can reach the deeper tissues that support the tooth, including the bone, with consequences that may compromise the stability of your teeth. That is why early detection generally makes treatment simpler and more conservative.

Daily habits that help protect your gums

Gentle brushing, with a suitable toothbrush and the right technique, is the starting point. Cleaning between the teeth — with floss or interdental brushes, depending on the space available — reaches areas a toothbrush cannot. Avoiding tobacco is equally important, as it is associated with a higher risk of gum problems, and a balanced diet supports overall oral health. If you have aligners, veneers or implants, pay even closer attention to this routine, because gum health is decisive for the longevity of any rehabilitation.

The role of check-ups and professional cleaning

Even with exemplary daily care, some deposits can only be removed by professional cleaning. During your appointment, the dentist assesses the condition of your gums, observes how the tissues respond and, when necessary, recommends the appropriate additional exams. How often you should attend check-ups is defined individually, according to your needs and history. Every case is assessed individually, and the follow-up plan is adapted to each person.

If you have noticed any of the signs described, or it has simply been a while since your last assessment, we invite you to book an evaluation appointment at LP CLINIC. You will have all the time you need to ask your questions and, together, we will define the best path for the health of your smile.
