After Your Aligners: Why Retention Matters as Much as the Treatment

Finishing a clear aligner treatment is a moment worth celebrating: your teeth have reached the planned position and your smile reflects months of commitment. But there is a question we make a point of addressing from the very beginning at LP CLINIC: what comes next? The following stage, retention, is what helps maintain what has been achieved, and it deserves as much attention as the treatment itself.
Why teeth may want to move
Teeth are not fixed rigidly in the bone. They are held by a ligament and surrounded by bone, gum and fibres that, after orthodontic movement, need time to reorganise and stabilise. In addition, throughout life, teeth continue to be influenced by the tongue, the lips, chewing and habits such as grinding. A position that has been well achieved is therefore not, in itself, a position guaranteed forever.
What retention actually is
Retention means using a device that helps stabilise your teeth in their new position. There are essentially two approaches: removable retainers, such as custom-made clear trays, and fixed retainers, thin wires bonded to the inner surface of the teeth. In some cases the two are combined. There is no single solution: the choice depends on the starting situation, the type of movement carried out, your habits and your preferences.
What the digital workflow adds
At LP CLINIC, a digital record of your mouth allows us to design retainers that closely follow the end of your treatment, and to keep that information for the future. If a retainer is lost or deformed, having that record available can make replacing it easier. Even so, every device is always assessed and adjusted during an appointment.
Looking after your retainer day to day
Follow your clinical team's instructions on how long to wear it; this is usually more demanding at the start and is adjusted over time. Clean a removable retainer with cool water and a soft brush, avoid very hot water, which can warp the plastic, and keep it in its case whenever it is out of your mouth so that it is neither lost nor damaged. Maintain careful oral hygiene, especially around a fixed retainer, where plaque can build up more easily. Our team will recommend suitable cleaning aids.
When to contact the clinic
Get in touch if your retainer no longer fits well, if you notice a change in the position of a tooth, if a fixed retainer comes loose, or if you have discomfort that does not go away. The sooner the situation is assessed, the simpler it usually is to resolve. Regular follow-up appointments also make it possible to monitor how stable the result remains.
Every smile is unique and every case is assessed individually. If you are considering aligner treatment, or have already completed it and have questions about retention, the LP CLINIC team would be delighted to welcome you for an assessment appointment, where we can look at your case with the time it deserves.
